Kring sexhandel och en alltför förenklad uppfattning om prostitution

Singers debattinlägg som publicerades i Sydsvenskan idag har skapat en liten känslostorm hos en del läsare. Även hos mig.
Inlägget belyser prostitutionen som fenomen i vår tid. Singer försöker förklara sexköparnas okuvliga drift i förhållande till de prostituerades val att sälja sina kroppar. Som att prostitution skulle vara ett effektivt och inkomstberikande arbetsalternativ till snabbmatskedjornas stressfyllda och lågavlönade jobb. Som att det på något vis skulle vara strategiskt smart att bli hora? Att ”arbeta i en laglig bordell är varken särskilt farligt eller hälsovådligt” menar Singer och säger vidare att sexarbetare ”är stolta över att inte bara kunna ge fysisk njutning, men också känslomässigt stöd till människor som inte kan få sex någon annanstans”. Var det empiriska stödet för detta finns är oklart, så en får utgå från att det är Singers personliga uppfattning.

Under mina 12 år inom socialtjänsten har jag hittills inte mött en enda person, vare sig kvinna eller man eller annat, vare sig ung eller gammal eller mitt emellan, som njutit av sitt ”jobb” som prostituerad. Jag har inte träffat eller ens hört talas om någon som varit stolt över vad de gör för att tjäna pengar – eller som egentligen tycker att det är ett aktivt val utifrån situationen de befinner sig i. Och då pratar vi ändå om medborgare i det svenska samhället. Vi pratar inte ens om prostituerade utanför Sveriges gränser, i andra länder utan samma slags skyddsnät som vi har, i samhällen med större social utsatthet och växande klyftor mellan rik och fattig. Singer pratar däremot om prostituerade på global nivå, förvisso med undantag för barnsexhandel och trafficking. En farlig gränsdragning i sig, för vem avgör exakt var gränsen mellan en till synes frivillig bordellverksamhet där människor sexarbetar för sitt eget nöjes skull och ett ställe där samma människor indirekt tvingas ha sex mot pengar, kanske på grund brist på andra jobbmöjligheter? Verkligheten är inte så enkel att den alltid låter sig reduceras till att handla om människans egna val. Det gör mig både ledsen och arg att läsa en del av Singers argument, mest på grund av att de saknar djup och nyans på en psykosocial nivå. Därmed uteblir förståelsen för den större bakomliggande problematiken.
Det är lätt att rationalisera bort utsattheten genom att påvisa den marknadsmässiga relationen mellan utbud och efterfrågan. Det är enkelt att påstå att kriminalisering bara förvärrar för en redan ansatt grupp (sexsäljare men även sexköpare). Singer må ha rätt i en del, och han är uppenbarligen både påläst och genomtänkt i sina resonemang, och åberopar Amnestys ståndpunkt i världsdebatten. Men i praktiken innebär det inte att det problemet på individnivå blir löst på grund av att begränsande lagstiftning upphör. Inte ens till förmån för ”individens frihet”, för då utgår Singer från att prostitution generellt sett är ett helt frivilligt val.
Av de som säljer sex i världen vågar jag påstå att de flesta är kvinnor medan de flesta sexköpare är män. Prostitution utmålas ofta som världens äldsta yrke, vilket borde anses vara utrett och förkastat av historiker som med enkelhet kunnat peka på att jägare och fiskare ligger betydligt närmre sanningen. Sexköp går ut på att köpa en annan persons, oftast en kvinnas, kropp för en tidsperiod. Mer objektifiering av kroppen än så blir det liksom inte. Trots detta menar Singer att ”arbeta i en laglig bordell är varken särskilt farligt eller hälsovådligt”. Det är alltså inte psykiskt nedbrytande att sälja sin kropp, enligt honom, till skillnad från vad andra studier visat. Att feminister och andra strävare efter jämlikhet reagerar starkt på Singers debattartikel är föga förvånande.

I ett samhälle som kännetecknas av människors lika värde och rätt till ett fritt liv är avkriminalisering inget annat än ett tyst okej från staten. Ett okej som i att staten inte erkänner problemet utan återigen låter allt vara osynligt och ouppmärksammat. Det är ett myndigt, statligt okej vilket i sin tur innebär att prostitutionen fortsätter.
Men det är klart, tycker en inte att det är ett problem att t ex en gymnasietjej låter 3-4 män fritt använda sig av hennes underliv varje dag för att ha råd med att ta droger, eller att en högskolestuderande kille säljer sin pojkkropp till högt uppsatta tjänstemän för att ha råd med överprishyra på sitt andrahandskontrakt så är det ju fritt fram, eller hur? Men för de som möter och vågar lyssna på dessa trasiga och i allra högsta grad utsatta personer är prostitutionen ett reellt samhällsproblem. Precis som droger och kriminalitet. Och för dem? Det är ett övergripande och livsavgörande problem som oftast förekommer i samband med andra stora problem som missbruk, social utsatthet som t ex fattigdom och arbetslöshet och framför allt psykisk ohälsa (Källor bla: Rapport till Socialstyrelsen, Handlingsplan mot prostitution och människohandel för sexuella ändamål, Regeringskansliet: Mot prostitution och människohandel för sexuella ändamål).
Prostitutionssupporters brukar beskylla motståndarna för att leverera moralkakor. Men människohandel, oavsett form, är ett problem som i grund och botten inte enbart handlar om moral. Det handlar främst om social och ekonomisk utsatthet och andra människors olika motiv och behov att dra fördel av denna utsatthet. Singers (m fl) har en förmåga att förenkla och romantisera eller försköna en långt mer mörk och komplex verklighet, där moralen förvisso är en bidragande faktor till problemet i fråga. För med moral kommer skam och skuld. Med moral kommer förväntningar och reaktioner.
Men moralen kan även vara en indikator, en kompass som visar vägen i samhället utifrån rådande förhållande. Singer pekar på individens fria vilja som det absoluta rättesnöret som ett argument för att avkriminalisera sexhandel på global nivå, men då behöver vi komma ihåg något avgörande. Då frikopplas staten från skyldigheten att uppmärksamma var och en av de människor som är fast i prostitution och de problemen som i de allra flesta fall medföljer. Vi får helt enkelt tulla på alla människors lika värde och rätt till ett fritt liv.
