Som att prostitution skulle vara ett effektivt och inkomstberikande arbetsalternativ till snabbmatskedjornas stressfyllda och lågavlönade jobb. Som att det på något vis skulle vara strategiskt smart att bli hora? Att ”arbeta i en laglig bordell är varken särskilt farligt eller hälsovådligt” menar Singer och säger vidare att sexarbetare ”är stolta över att inte bara kunna ge fysisk njutning, men också känslomässigt stöd till människor som inte kan få sex någon annanstans”. Var det empiriska stödet för detta finns är oklart, så en får utgå från att det är Singers personliga uppfattning.

Under mina 12 år inom socialtjänsten har jag hittills inte mött en enda person, vare sig kvinna eller man eller annat, vare sig ung eller gammal eller mitt emellan, som njutit av sitt ”jobb” som prostituerad. Vi pratar inte ens om prostituerade utanför Sveriges gränser, i andra länder utan samma slags skyddsnät som vi har, i samhällen med större social utsatthet och växande klyftor mellan rik och fattig. Singer pratar däremot om prostituerade på global nivå, förvisso med undantag för barnsexhandel och trafficking. En farlig gränsdragning i sig, för vem avgör exakt var gränsen mellan en till synes frivillig bordellverksamhet där människor sexarbetar för sitt eget nöjes skull och ett ställe där samma människor indirekt tvingas ha sex mot pengar, kanske på grund brist på andra jobbmöjligheter? Verkligheten är inte så enkel att den alltid låter sig reduceras till att handla om människans egna val. Det gör mig både ledsen och arg att läsa en del av Singers argument, mest på grund av att de saknar djup och nyans på en psykosocial nivå. Prostitutionssupporters brukar beskylla motståndarna för att leverera moralkakor. Men människohandel, oavsett form, är ett problem som i grund och botten inte enbart handlar om moral.
